I took my original q-jet (which was working fine except for puking fuel out of the acc pump) off and replaced it with my now second brand new edlebrock q-jet 1901. The secondaries wont open and the dashpot is keeping the air flaps closed. Its a 69 vette with no PS or PB so there is only one vacc hose and its from the distributor.
All i can think is the gasket on the intake doesnt have the cutouts or the heat shield. My friends say to hook the distributor hose to another port but I dont think that will make a difference.
My really fast vette now drives like a escort any advice would be much appreciated. :mad
Q-Jets rear barrels open mechanically. Make sure the choke is completely open. You should then be able to make the rears open wide. The air flap has an adjustment that will allow the flap to open quicker. Its on the RH side and has a set screw and an adjuster. Loosen the set and adjust the flap to your liking.
Mick, I am not 100% clear on what you are saying about the gasket not having the cutouts?? but.... if your secondaries are not opening, the first thing I would check is to make sure the accelerator linkage pulls the throttle all the way open when the gas pedal is floored. It is very easy to hook it up with a little play in it, so that when you floor it the linkage does not pull back all the way on the carb and you are not at full throttle..... and the secondaries dont open.
Second thing - you say only one vac hose, from the distributor. Your carb should have come with a photo that clearly labels all the ports and identifies the distributor vacuum advance port. Also, dont you have a hose from the front of the carb to the PCV valve? Any port that is not being used should be capped, or you will have a bad vacuum leak. Also, did you plug the power brake port at the rear of the carb? I forgot that one the first time I started my car with the new 1901 boy did it run like crap!! Major vacuum sucking leak!
I like my edelbrock 1901, ran fine right out of the box, but it is definitely not a performance carb: it runs fine but not particularly strong. MJ
Thanks for the ideas and yes I have done all of the things you mentioned. The pedal line still needs to have a liitle play removed but even with that removed and working the carb by hand I still just cant get the secondaries to open.

Mechanical secondaries lockout? Check to see if it drops out of the way. bottom of passenger side, at the rear of the carb.

Ahhh! I am the lowley Grasshopper in the eyes of your wisdom!
After many hours of staring at and pondering over my carb dilema. Simple is the first thing I should of checked. All my attempts to "adjust" or "fix till its broke" . Gave me nothing untill one wise man from this group gave me the answer. Many Thanx
Solution: Throttle Cable length too short. Disconnected throttle cable and wala worked like a fine swiss watch. Now I must adjust ( "fix till its )broke" the cable.
Many Thanx
Welcome to the forum from down the street. Where in Ridgeville do you live? I basically live near the corner of Butternut & Great Northern Blvd. Do you go to any of the local cruise in's? My dad and I will be going to the one at Our Place Restaurant (in Ridgeville, on Center Ridge Rd) tonight (He has a '67, and I have the '68). It'd be nice to meet some fellow C-3ers in the area.
If you're not doing anything tonight, stop by, since you've fixed your Q-Jet problem. It's just West of Lear.
