ive checked all the articles about this topic and nothing fits with my situation. when i got it back from the shop the mechanic adjusted the idle pretty high so it would run. when i was taking it home sometimes it would just die if i slowed down too much (15mph) or it would feel like it was gonna take off like a rocket if i didnt keep my foot on the brake. ive been trying to time this thing and the light says its like at 40* w/ advanced hooked up. i have to keep it rev'd at like 2000 rpm to keep it even running so i can put a timing light on it. smog pump isnt hooked up if that helps.
yep, sounds a lot like a massive vacuum leak somewhere. Check for an open vaccum port on the carb, a cracked or loose vacuum hose somewhere.
BTW, you need to check and set timing with the vacuum advance unhooked the the vacuum line plugged.
If you can't get it to idle at a normal idle speed you can't check your initial timing but at least you can check toyr total timing and see what's it's all in by.
I had the exact same problem as you and it ended up being a massive vaccum leak. In my case it was the carb, but I doubt yours would be in the same location. check all vaccum lines to see if there disconnected or any cracks in the lines.
