the vortec damper & timing cover should have timing marks in different location than old damper & timing cover. Suggest you keep a matched pair. It's your motor/project ... but you know which cam-cover-damper setup I'd go with.

If I were to use my old damper, I wonder as well if my double roller timing chain will fit and if so, can I use the old timing chain cover. Sorry for all the confusing questions. All the while, I thought that other than the heads, the vortec motor is the same as my old one.

Jeez ... maybe this will help simplify choice:
Go get take out roller cam from a ZZ4 motor ... GM P/N 10185071 ... Duration @ 0.050" 208/221, Valve Lift 474/510, 112 Lobe Center Separation ... here's one that's never been run on ebay item # 8075837569 for $135. Then get your heads checked & springs set for .510" lift. Put your vortec motor back together with all your other vortec stuff ... and if it don't make at least 320 HP at crank I'll kiss yer butt.
Your old double roller will not fit a vortec cam nor will it fit under a composite vortec cover ... and your old damper's timing mark won't line up with a composite vortec cover's timing mark.
