The gas tank is out of my 79 with the bands sand blasted and the tank cleaned with a brush on a angle grinder. The tank cross support has been powder coated gloss black. Now I need to decide what to do with the bands and tank to keep them looking good without rust showing up next year. I want to keep the tank silver and looking as close to factory as I can. The frame is getting a coat of POR-15 and thought the bands might also look good in black. But what to put on the tank?? It will be in non NCRS sanctioned shows and I am fussy about appearance. I'd like to hear from those who have traveled this path with suggestions on the tank and bands. Thanks!!!
My tank was pretty ugly, I wire wheeled and painted with Eastwood tank color and then coated inside with Eastwood tank stuff. Then put back on with new straps for about $80 bucks total. Looks like new.
Yup...both cars are red and the 79 will have the underside fiberglass painted red up to the firewall. I'm looking for contrast to show off all the parts.
Z-Man, "I used POR-15 Metal Mask. Looks pretty close to the original metal..."
I tried to add it to my POR-15 order, but it is too late; guess I will be adding it on Monday. Is Metal Mask a thin paint film and not a thick, heavy product? Will it prevent future rust as well as the black frame coating?

I know I will like the look of the Eastwood paint. If the Metal Mask doesn't have the look I'm after I will top coat it with the Eastwood spray.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, all helpful info!
... that sure looks better than the Krylon silver spray paint I used to paint my tank. I just wanted something to cover my tank to keep it from rusting. I know my car will never win any sort of NCRS award.

It seems thinner than the POR-15 black stuff - maybe not as tough. However, it's thick enough to retain slight brush marks. You are supposed to paint it on in random directions so that it gives a metallic galvanized type of look. It probably protects as good as anything against rust.
