I usually hook it up to the alternator BAT terminal. On my car there are also two terminals on the firewall, on the driver's side, which can also be used.

I use the positive terminal on the drivers side front wheel well. I ground to the brake lines off the master cylinder.
I've seen one forum member who made a pigtail off alternator battery terminal to use for this specific purpose, then put a cover on the exposed terminal end when not being used, pretty sweet setup. I simply use the hood light wire, since I installed a wire which can be disconnected during long periods of hood up, and I just put the female end on my timing light lead, works great.
Wanderer- this is what I was afraid of too after the stories of burnt fusible links and other elec. problems I have read about here. What do the connections you use look like? Do they appear to be stock or are they add-ons?

I think Wanderer is talking about the horn relay (on early C3s) that is mounted on the driver side engine compartment wheelwell just below the edge of the fender. Not sure if later C3s have the relay there. It has a positive terminal that is perfect for connecting the timing light clip. I use this for positive and the alternator ground for negative.
On our '73, I found a junction on some sort of relay or circuit breaker under the lip of the hood opening on the driver side, just ahead of the filler cap for the windshield washer reservoir. I think it is wired directly to the alternator hot lead. It just has the advantage of a little less metal around that can cause a short. I clip the hot lead there, and the ground lead to the alternator bracket, and everything is on the side where I need to stand to check the timing.
