Default Nice Surprise- Possible Mods??

I have a 1980 L48 with 49K miles

I bought the car last fall and have been steadily doing small projects on the car. Reading the posts here and people talking about lighting up the tires from a stop-I have been jealous because I have not been able to do this- so I just thought old car -L48- I have what I have for now

Well I put a new fuel filter on and now I can light the tires up. My engine was starving for fuel.

Question: Should a stock L48 with 49K be able to do this or is there possible modifications to this engine that I do not know about??

There are ALWAYS modifications. True Dual exhaust, timing advance changes, Carb tuning, etc...
If your in a non emissions inspection state you have more choices

You're asking us if the prev. owner of YOUR car did some mods to it that YOU don't know about?

Let me ask the question another way.

If this 1980 L48 with 49K miles is truely stock, should it be able to light up the tires from a stop?

If generally the answer is no- then there is probably some modifications that have been done to give it the ability to light the tires- correct??

My Dad's stock '78 Olds Cutlass with a 305 and a TH200 will turn the rear tires from a stop. My stock '93 Bonneville would turn the front tires from a stop. Your 'Vette has more power than either of those cars. I do not think it is an indication of anything.

Are we talking about squeekin the tires from a stop turning the wheels 90 degrees in the rain? Even I can do that in my 74 305 which feels like its only working on 1 cyclinder.
Most vettes should be able to do this STOCK, if you can't then either your engine is not at full stock potential (clogged filters) or you have realllly good traction...which is not a bad thing.
p.s. if thats your blue vette in ur avitar, I like that color & hood on that style alot. Very nice.

Is is an automatic or stickshift ? If it is the latter, when I was a kid I could light up the tires on my mother's six cylinder 65 Ramble station wagon that was running on 5 cylinders, rev it up high enough and dump the clutch

Yeah thats my Vette- bought it last fall. The car is an automatic. The previous owner did not know anything about Vettes and for the most part neither did I. It turned out to be a good buy so far.
