Sounds like you may have two different noises.Unless the fan clutch is going bad.Other than that nothing with the engine would do as you describe. All noises would be RPM related. And anything in the chssis would not make noise sitting still.

So, I called the shop again last night just before closing and apparently they still had not had a chance to take a look at it. It would have been nice to know that they were so backed up when I left the car with them. I miss my baby...
Just got the car back from the shop and they were able to narrow the noise down to the area of the bell housing. Said it could be the throwout bearing, which sucks seeing as how I had all that replaced 3 months ago. So, if I want to really figure out what is going on, I will have to pay someone to drop the tranny. Annoying.

I just went through that with mine and it was because some moron put the inspection cover on wrong and it was bouncing off the crank hub.You said it doesn't stop if you step on the cluch?Chances are thats what it is.
Dont know that I am familiar with an inspection cover. What is that?
If it was installed incorrectly, wouldnt I have known that immediately?
The inspection cover is a tin plate that bolts to the bellhousing. It covers the opening on the bottom of the bellhousing to keep crud off the flywheel. It is possible the it was put on just close enough to the crank that it moved with temp or an outside force(road debris)to make contact enough for noise.Easiest way to find out it remove it(4 bolts,2 minutes)and start it up,go for a ride.If the noise is gone you found the source.

Oh right. I didnt know what that was called. I will crawl under there this weekend and see what there is to see. Thanks for the tip!
It was pouring rain here most of the weekend and I dont have a garage, so I didnt get a chance to get under there. Still living with it for the time being.
Next Sunday will be nothin' but the vette (assuming we have some sunshine.) Thinking about taking my first run at adjusting the valves as well.
That is, of course, unless this rebuilt 350 I found locally turns out to be a good deal. If that is the case, I may have to put out the crossed flags symbol and beg for some local vette guys to come help me drop it in. It would be really nice to get rid of that 305. That may be the "baby with the bathwater" solution to the strange noise, but it would make me much happier. Will let you know...
