Default brake bleeding...sucking air??

Hi Guys,
I tried to bleed the right rear caliper but it seems to be sucking in air .......is this possible from around the piston or is it coming in somewhere else? I am using the "pump the pedal" method.
The calipers are Stainless steal sleeved about 10 years old with Silicone brake fluid.

Thanks.........

OK, I got to ask, you crack open the bleeder, have helper press the pedal, close the bleeder, let up on the pedal. Right?

Air can get by the threads on the bleeders. Remove the bleeder and put some grease around the threads. This will also make future brake jobs easier,..the bleeders won't rust in.

Good luck!

Yes it can suck air in if the rotor runout is more than .005 and 60 MPH---.010 will suck air around 40 MPH--around piston-replace seals and use GM method of silicone around dust seals in manual

SIXFOOTER.....YEP, thats how I have been doing the bleeding.

73, Dark Blue 454.... I tightened the bleed screws pretty tight and I am sure there not leaking...there in good condition but I will try the grease.

dwncchs ...

The caliper keeps sucking in air "somewhere "after I tighten the bleed screw and tell my helper to let the pedal up...after three pumps of the pedal and held to the floor, I open the bleed screw and more air comes out. I cut a piece of the clear tubing off to get a good tight fit on the bleeder screw.
I tried last night for about 20 minutes and that side of the caliper keeps pushing air out the clear tubing. The other side of the caliper bled out fine.

If your using the method of a tube on the bleeder and the other end in a bottle of fluid -then you will need to seal the bleeder threads with teflon tape---If air was coming in around piston on bleeding(without driving) then it would probably leak fluid under pressure.I gravity bleed using a tiny brass hammer.Creates no bubbles!

I think your right about the air leaking around the bleeder ......I will try Teflon tape.

If I have air in one of the front calipers, would the car pull left or right?

Thanks for your help,
John

Yes that can cause it but make sure you dont have loose steering components-like the idler arm for one--did you bench bleed the master cyl.thats very important -bench bleed and when you have it do it again-no bubbles not even 1

I'm a bit confused,..I thought you were having problems removing the air while bleeding the brakes. My suggestion above delt with bleeding the brakes.

Teflon tape won't do anything; a) I don't think it would stand up to brake fluid, and b) the threads aren't what stops fluid,..the bottom of the bleeders have a taper fit which closes a hole when the bleeder is tightened.

454- he is (I think) putting a hose over bleeder and putting other end down in a bottle of fluid and then leaving bleeder open and pumping pedal and waiting for air to stop coming out-but each stroke sucks a little air in around threads and teflon tape or grease or pipe dope temporarily stops that.

Ahh,..then my original suggestion will solve his problem.

Also just to add,..was the master cylinder removed/changed? If so, was it bench-bled?

Thanks guys,

I tried the left caliper and both the left and right "inside" calipers leak air, I didn't try the Teflon tape but I will try tonight...........I think thats where the problem is.
There both bled "left and right" it kind of threw me when I kept seeing air bubbles coming out of the calipers.

Again......thanks for your help.
