Have my 75 vert ready for the paint shop new toledo pro flex bumpers installed(on & off about 10 times to get an acceptable fit plus some filler work) Painter (camaro guy nice work) wants to remove the bumpers to prime & paint the surfaces where they mate necessary or no? these areas are bare fiberglass right now?Doing a base /clear if that matters

Yes, take them off. If they are not seperated during the painting process, paint will fill the gap and eventually crack. It won't look good.

edit to add:
If you are doing a metallic color, they should be on the car when it is sprayed. Just leave them loose enough so that the paint will not bridge the gap.

You're paying your painter for his expertise and that's what he recommends. Trust him.

It's also probably a little easier for him to get a good coat.

It is better to remove the bumpers and paint them on stands to ensure good paint coverage and flow on the bottom's that would be difficult to to reach if mounted on the car. Metallic paint does not matter since the painter is using the same paint mix and gun at the same time as the rest of the car.

By leaving the bumpers on the body everybody above is correct, but you want to avoid leaving them on and separating them from the body with a gap. The gap can create an open dust or dirt area that can blow onto the paint, plus only dry spray will get onto the mounting surfaces of the body and bumper.

If you are worried about causing damage to the painted surfaces when you reinstall them you can always just loosen the bumper and put some spacers between the bumper and body. This will allow the area between the two to get painted. All you need to do then is remove the spacers and tighten the bolts.

The only issue if you are using metalic is that after the final coat, most painters will do a quick "fog" coat to insure the flakes lay evenly. A good painter can do this with the bumpers on or off if the booth is large enough.
