please help, need to have it off, and put back on by the time i leave for work in the morning
I bought a 73 dash at Bloomington this past weekend - the front of the dash pad has several metal clips that look to clamp around a flange. It looks like a tug on it would release it.

I just removed mine this past weekend. I have an 80 so I am not sure this will help. The headlight **** is pressed on (really tight). I had to clamp the rod close to the **** and pry it off with a screw driver pushing against the vice grips. The dash has two push in clips at the top. One is above the speedmeter/tach. cluster and the other is above the glove box.
I hope this helps!
Not sure what year you have, but in the Dr. Rebuild catalog it says the same switch fits 68-77, then 78-82 are different. Then when you look at the **** in the catalog, all C3 years say 'rod and ****' so I gotta think they all come out pretty much the same.
On my 68, the **** and shaft come out of the switch housing by pushing on a small pin that is on the switch housing itself. To install the ****, you push the **** and rod assembly through the dash into the switch assembly. A barb on the end of the rod locks into the spring loaded pin. The pin is inline with where the shaft of the **** assembly goes in and maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch down the body of the switch housing.
To release the ****/rod, pull the **** out so the switch is in the on position. Then push the pin on the side of the switch in to disengage the barb and pull the rod/**** assembly out. It's been a year or so since I was in there so I'm trying visualize how it was but hopefully you've got the idea. Good luck.

You did it WRONG!If you pushed the **** in then pushed the release button on the back the whole shaft,**** and all would have slid right out.
Push the button down (red circle).
Then pull the ****.
NO tools required.

If you would have checked the forum first, you would have learned the proper proceedure for that operation.
