Default 78 vette rear end

What gears could I run on the stock carrier? I think that I have 3.08's but I'm not sure. I was hoping for 3.55's or even 3.73's or somewere in between. Also what are the specs on it? Like is it a gm 8.2 or 8.5?

I don't know the specs, but I have 3.55 in my 78, and I am pretty sure that ecklers has 3.73 and 4.11 in the same pumkin.

3.73 is the max that will fit a 3 series carrier a 4.11 will require a 4 series carrier.

For your stock 3 series carrier you can get 273,308,336,355,370,373,390,411,and 433's all will fit. Now some of these are only available from Tom's and they are the better gears. The 373 and 411's are backordered these days. Richmond and others sell the 370 ratio but if you're going to buy new then buy Tom's. I had a set of 373's here that I was going to use on one of my rebuilds but will be using it for another forum buddy instead. If you need them quick you'll pay a lot for them if you can find them.

Gary, how insanely thick are those ring gears or spacers supplied with them?

Not bad, I think Norval just setup a set of 433 I shipped to Canada a couple of weeks ago. No spacers are used, just a thick RG on the 411 and 433's. The 390's are Richmonds and not the ones I'd use. The 373 down are the stock size.

If I was to change my gears out could I just use the shims that are already in it so long as I put them back were they came from? Or do I have to remeasure it. Also would 3.55's be enough for heavy acceleration with a stock turbo 350 and a 2500 stall torque converter? My powerband is from 2000-6300 rpms.

355 will work with that setup. Yes you'll have to go through the setup, the carrier shims will be different and the pinion may be close but you have to set it up right or you'll have problems, new gears or not.

I just looked up a cam with the same duration from Lunati. So I'll go with your finings since they look the best.
