Default Starter shims

I recently had to replace the starter in my 71 with a 350. It did not have any shims on it when I took it off, but the new one required 3 shims to stop making a horrible noise. I put a .06, .04, and a .02 on it. That was all that came in the pack of shims I bought. It was a remanufactured duralast starter from autozone. Should I take it back since it required that much shimming? I can get a new (not remanufactured) one for $30 more. Would that do me any good or should I just stick with what I have. Also the starter seems louder than the old one. It isn't making the grinding noise, it is just louder.

I don't think shimming will cause you any problems. You should be okay.
God bless, Sensei

hop under the car and pull the gear out with a screw driver and sell how it looks messed with the flywheel, sometimes you get lucky and don't need shims. Also, make sure you have that little bracket that connects to the block or the starter will **** sideways after a few starts and the noise will return.
