weird thing on my 71... doesnt smoke on cold startup, but after driving a while then shutting it off, it smokes like crazy when started back up...just on startup...doesnt smoke while running down the road (or so it seems)....i put new valve covers on with baffles, thinking it might be sucking oil back through the vacuum at the base of the carb, but that doesnt seem to be helping.
how difficult is it to replace the valve seals?? isn't there a special tool required?
Tim
It's not too tough a job but you will need a valve spring compressor. I picked one up for about $20 locally but you may also be able to borrow one from AutoZone or similar. You will also have to readjust the valves when finished.
My 75 was doing just what you describe yours is doing along w/puffing out smoke upon deaccelleration. You might want to find a long downhill stretch and keep the car in a lower gear against the engine compression and see if you get smoke then too. This is another sign of worn seals (or in the worse case worn valve stems or guides)
After I replaced the valve seals, no more smoke. Now I have to go back and also do the seals on my 84 as it is doing the same thing. Always something.
