Man, I hate to buy anything from a GM dealer--just bought two bottles of GM "limited slip axle lubricant additive" and two bottles of GM "axle lubricant" and paid $43! Same stuff by another manufacturer at Autozone would run me less than $15, but from past threads, I was thinking I better get the GM stuff. But ouch!
And it probably won't do me any good anyhow if GKull's diagnosis of my noise problem (that the posi unit housing has probably started to elongate the pin hole throught the posi unit housing) is right, and I'm pretty sure it is. :( But I figured, what the heck, can't hurt to change the oil & addititive & shouldn't cost much. Well, only about $75 once I pay the Quickie lube place to change it out.
JB, $43   . I have always used aftermarket differential lube (Mobil 1 - ever since it came out) and the GM brand of positraction additive. I assume that they gave you the lube in their gold plated containers. ;). You may have cured me of even wanting to try their axle lube.

I hate to tell you this, but your GM dealer used his "price escalator program" on you. The GM LIST prices for the items which you purchased are as follows:
So, at GM LIST the total for the items which you purchased (2 of the axle lube + 1 of the additive) should have come to $20.30. It sounds to me like they had their "price escalator program" in "high gear" and got you with the "200% solution". In other words, DOUBLED the GM LIST price. What makes this worse is that many GM dealers will sell at 25%, or even more, OFF GM list price. So, at that discount, you'd be paying about the $15 Autozone price, but getting ASSURED high quality GM products.
Now, this is IN NO WAY illegal or improper or unethical. If it's legal for someone to purchase parts at a deep discount, then it's just as legal for someone else to be charged a super-premium. But, you might want to shop around for GM dealers that won't get you with the "price escalator". Make sure that "LIST PRICE" shown on your invoice is the "GM list price" and not "THE DEALER'S LIST PRICE". The two are not necessarily the same.
By the way, I've noticed that the "price escalator program" is most often used by big city dealers on the east and west coasts. Usually, those "in between" are more merciful. But, you can encounter it anywhere, Like I say, there's no law against it.
Joe, I disagree - I think it is unethical to charge double GM list for gear lube and posi additive. I know we bear personal responsibility to be an educated consumer, but I think its ridiculous to have to research the cost of a quart of oil before walking into your local chevy dealer. Most of us wouldnt walk in and ask, "What will a quart of oil cost me?", rather, we walk in and say "gimme 2 quarts of gear lube and one posi-add... ok.... how much? WTF!!!!!!!" MJ
Yep, that's what I did--I walked in, said give me the lube & the additive, he handed me the bottles and an invoice, and I walked over to the cashier window with it. I only noticed the price then, and just about had a fit--but then I thought, "well, I need the stuff, and the next nearest Chevy dealer is 30 miles away, and probably just as big a ripoff." I'm still thinking I may take the stuff back and buy the Mobil 1 & the generic posi-lube. Seriously guys, would it really make much difference on a 117K car?
I dunno, I"m so tired of hearing of this majic GM posi additive stuff,...
it's a sales gimmic....
only thing I have ever used in any GM clutch and mopar cone (auburn) type posi rear is off the discount store shelf lube, as long as it states it's for posi differentials...it's FINE, new installs, new/used clutches/bearings...it's fine...just drive in circles in a parking lot for a few rounds, then reverse directions and do it again...
works fine,...been doing it for over 30 years now...
Is two 24 oz. bottles of lube and one 4 oz. bottle of additive the proper amount? I ask because I am going to be changing mine soon. If I don't use the GM stuff, what else is good?
Use the numbers that Joe gave you and go to http://www.gmmotors.com they sell at 15% over cost but enough for several changes and store it at home.
