I hear what sounds like a buzzing alarm? from the center guages..temp, oil, volt, etc... Everything looks fine although the volt meter looks a little high. 14ish.. I was going to disconnect them one at a time (starting with the volt meter) but thought I'd ask here first. Do all the guages trigger some sort of an alarm? Does each have their own alarm? Could this buzzing be somthing else? It's not on all the time but it does come on pretty frequently.
That's sort of the sound.. I didn't know this car had an alarm clock in it! Actually I only hear it when she's running. After reading the post about overcharging alternators I'm leaning more towards the Volt meter trying to warn me.. I have to see how many volts are actually being pushed into the battery. This may really be the start of another problem and not just a shorting guage..
Your choke heater relay is buzzing. That indicates that you have a blown fuse in your fuse block. The choke heater relay is a green cube and resembles (in shape) the horn relay you find under dash area. The choke heater relay only starts to buzz when you blow the related fuse.
Note: Have you also noted inoperable choke? Likely disabled from fuse failure. Check the fuse and let us know. It should stop the buzz!
I'm assuming the choke heater relay is for the carburetor choke and that seems to work fine. Three pumps in the morning, turn key and she starts.. idles higher than when warm. Does anyone know if any of the guages actually buzz?
You might try pulling the left console cover off to see if it is the choke heater relay buzzing. I've never heard of any other cause of buzzing noise from console. It mounts to the underside of the console just forward/to left of the shifter.
Thanks.. I'll give it a look tonight although the buzzing doesn't seem to be comming from that low on the console the sound could be traveling. Is it close to the cigarette lighter.. another thing I need to replace if I can find a new one that fits..
TedH,
You were right. I went into this half hearted because the buzzing noise sounded like it was up by the oil or volt guages. I took off the drivers side panel, found the relay, started the car.. couple seconds latter that relay started buzzing.. THANK YOU !!
Now to fix it.. I put a test light on one of the connectors, turned the key on and I got power to the relay so I'm guessing that the fuse is not the problem.. note I said guessing.. I did a continuity test on the relay and I have continuity between two posts.. hot and right side.. makes sense. Could it be a bad relay. I checked at Napa and they don't carry it.. said he never did.. What does this relay do? I unpluged it while it was buzzing and no difference. The choke closes and the car starts pretty easy so what purpose does this relay provide. I'm wondering if the problem could be at the other end.. carborator?
Not to beat this to death but.. This morning I started the car without the relay installed.. no problem starting.. choke light stayed lit. I drove a bit and noticed the car starting to bog down. At the first stop I notice the engine still reving high.. choke was still on. I went a couple more miles and bogging started to bother me so I pulled over and reinstalled the relay. The engine was warm but the choke still stayed on for a couple more miles after the relay was installed. After a couple more miles I noticed that the choke was off and I heard the buzzing noise. Question.. What does this relay do? I'm guessing that it's a timed choke. After the relay warms up it releases control to the spring operated choke. Does that make sense. When it's installed everything works fine..that I can tell except it buzzes.. The only thought was that when it was really hot outside the car ran rough when I first started it.. choke didn't kick in at all. Maybe this relay..if working right.. would have caused the choke to set for a timed period.. Any thoughts?
