I seem to be needing to charge my battery alot. Altinator , and voltage regulator check out, and have been replaced. There appears to be a drain on the system when car has set for days. I have also disconnected the clock, and still seem to have a drain . Any ideas on how to check system??? Help ! This is on a 1968 427/ B.B
Start by hooking up an ammeter between the positive post and wire, look at the draw, then pull fuses until it goes away. Once you have isolated which fuses the draw is on, look for shorts in the systems on those fuses.
The other, simpler solution is to wire up a quick disconnect and disconnect it whenever you park the car... Not a good solution, but a fast, cheap option...
The positive battery wire. You will have to remove the positive cable from the battery first and then use the amp (not volts) meter to measure the current flowing from the battery (no longer connected directly to positive wire) to the positive battery cable.
I just had to check this on my 71 BB a few weeks ago. The current draw with the door closed is only 0.02 Amp (20 milli amp). The only thing that SHOULD be pulling current is the clock. I think I have a newer quartz clock. An original clock may draw slightly more current.
With the door open it was about 1.2 amp to power the interior lights.
