I've got what I think may be a problem with either my water pump or a/c compressor. REALLY loud rattling/whining with screeching when I first start it up (rattling goes on all the time) and some burned rubber smell. Is there any easy way to tell what's causing it?
Also, can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the west suburbs of Detroit?
remove belt going to compressor. Spin the compressor pulley by hand and see if it is rough, binding. Sounds like either compress clutch/bearing is sizeing up or you have losse belt. Might even be alternator, powersteering pump or smog pump. remove each belt and check one at a time.
If water pump is going south, you will usually see colant leaking out of the weep hole due to the bearing going bad.
Remove all belts and spin fan/water pump. Check for wobble. Replace watter pump and fan clutch at the same time. Bad fan clutch will tear up the water pump bearing if it wobbling.
