As far as the controversy over Rochester, Holley, Carter etc. goes I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder! In the 60’s and 70’s I raced drag cars, stock cars and sprinters. Generally Carter AFB’s and later on Q-Jets worked very well on the drag cars. On the roundy-round cars we tended to prefer Holley double pumpers. They made a great on off valve which held up better in the corners.
Isn’t it really just a matter of who had what bad experience with what???
There….. I’ve had my say. Under any circumstances this old guy appreciates a forum where he can share with those who have the same interests!
Dunno I've never had any problems with my q-jet in the corners.
Why not just get the L88 hood and be able to use a larger manifold and any carb you want?
One thing that makes me stick with the q-jet, besides the fact that it works perfectly, is my air cleaner. I don't want to give up my lovely ram air intake for one of those ugly drop base filters. Or have to spend uber $$$ on a new hood.
Everyone has their own opinions but I think you say this because you do not understand how to properly tune a Q-Jet as with some others (myself included) I threw away my quadrajet when rebuilding my engine because I thought it was old. I shoould have known something was wrong when I went to auto tech school and offered one of the instructors my Q-jet his eyes lit up as he took it. That carb has qreat potential when properly set up. Chevy did not put q-jets on their "high-performance" engines.

Sounds like bigblockk "I think you should just get rid of it. In fact, send it to me, I'll even pay shipping."
My eyes would light up too, if someone gave me a not-so-mangled q-jet for free.
I didn't know better then (June 2001) but I remember like it was yesterday. I try not to kick myself too hard. If I ever get my hands on another I will not. I currently have an 600 cfm Edel 1406 carb sitting atop my engine . I also have a new in the box 750 cfm Mighty Demon carb that I was to send to Lars but I have not done it yet.
