I received my new Delta 50's today and was surprised and now concerned about the size. They are a good 4" longer and 1 1/2" wider than the current mufflers, which I am not actually sure are factory size either. So the question is; will the Delta 50's fit up in muffler space nice and neat without hanging down or sticking out? Anyone with direct experience with this, your advise will be most appreciated.
Car is 1973 Coupe. I plan to get this job started thursday this week with new 2 1/2" system from Ecklers and Dr Gas crossover. I don't want the mufflers hanging out like hemeroids. I'm feeling rather anxious about this. Am I fretting over nothing, or should I send them back now and look for option 2? Any other tip's on installing this system?
You'll need to have custom pipes bent for the rear if you want to mount the Flowies flat in the stock location. The pipes don't line up. Otherwise you have to weld them in there at an angle, and please don't do that. It looks awful.
I have the 50s on mine and a friend has 50s on his 73. You need to have a custom system bent up. Don't waste your time and money with a prebent system. It won't fit right and the custom system are better.
I was really hoping to use the ecklers pre-bent system that is sitting in my garage. Any recommendations on good mufflers that will fit right in with the pre-bents? I was hoping not to have to pay a shop for a custom job. I also have a pair of Delta 40's which are 4" shorter. I was going to return them after reading all the posts on the drone they produce, but if they fit better with the ecklers system we may have to use them.
Continued comments and opinions appreciated.
Gordonm, your system does look nice though. Are you pleased with the sound and performance of the 50's?
I put DF-50's on my car a few months ago. Took the car to a local custom exhaust shop.
I agree with all the previous posts. You'll need a custom bent pipe on the inlet side in order for the mufflers to be positioned nicely between the spare tire and the side rear fenders. The guy who installed mine did a really great job of tucking the mufflers up high and keeping them pretty horizontal.
There is no way in hell I would have been able to install these mufflers myself. I watched the guy bend and weld the pipes. It was like watching an artist. My advice is to find a pro and get the job done right.
I do like the sound of the 50s. Not to loud but loud enough. I have had a lot of compliments on the sound of the car. If you want to use your existing pipes and the ydon't line up which I doubt they will. You might find a shop that can fabricate on a partial part of the syatem and use most of the system you have. I did find the custom system fit better and was much more solid than the stock LT1 system I had.
need I explain? I purchased 2 different prebent exhaust systems, one for stock config, another for headers. Managed to tuck the 50s up there somehow, but with all the clamps it was never tight enough and never fit real well. Finally went to the same shop Gordon used, worlds better. I like the 50s. I have a bigblock. The 50s have a distinctive sound. A mopar 440 sounds very similar if he is running 50s also.
Some people that are really really handy can do their own exhaust work. Most of us are better off going to a pro.
I have them on my 69 - headers, 2.5" tubes, Dr. Gas "X-Pipe" and as others have said, had it custom done. Very nice setup, great sound and performance.
You have a decision to make. Arey you ever going to mount a spare tire? If not, you can get a really nice tucked up close, no radical bends, system custom bent. I know you already have a pre-bent system, but someone will buy it. Do it once, be happy. Ask me how I know? Delta 50s sitting in the garage waiting for me to do my exhaust system all over again.
What most people dont understand is that Flowmasters and similar style mufflers are "universal fit mufflers". They fit everything and as a result really correctly fit nothing. There are no direct applications for Corvettes such as Walker makes. As a result they have to be custom installed by a muffler shop or face rattles and a sloppy looking job with reducers ect. unless you have 10 ft. sticks of straight tubing and a pipe bender in your garage.
Great info guy's. I'm convinced. The family that run's our local mobil station builds and races pro-stocks and they do custom exhaust work all the time and have a good rep. I have an appoinment with them for monday. He told be to bring the pipe kit, x-pipe and mufflers and he will cut/bend/weld it in there all nice and beautiful. I'll update this thread with pic's when it's all done.
thanks. Once again this board comes through. I would have been cussing up a storm this time tomorrow if I had stayed on course.
