You must be a noob. HAHA. Okay im done laughing. The gears you want are 3.70's trust me. you'll be happy. 9.9 times out of 10 they have 3.08 in them.

The base 4 spds had 336 and L82's had 355 or 370.
Automatics had 308.
The best gear is dependant on your eng/tranny setup. I would check to see what you have by counting the # turns on the input vs out on the diff.
The best gears for a vette are made by Toms's and they are 373 not 370. The 370 are GM, Yukon,Motive,Richmonds, etc. The 373 have been back ordered for months now.

If you're running at the track you'll want to do more then change gears too if you want it to last. At the minimum I'd set it up with a steel left cap, solid sleeve, tuned posi and HD cover.

If you find the post I have going it will show these parts in different differentials.

Good Luck

3.08 was an option on '77s as the "highway package" to keep revs down. The original purchaser of mine ordered it that way, and when I rebuilt the differential, I kept it that way.

I have just started doing some autocrossing, and I know that gearing makes pickup a little tough. This means I need to shift to get any speed coming out of the corners. However, since most of my driving is highway, I can keep the RPMs down to about 3,000.

So, as gtr1999 stated, the right gearing is entirely dependent on what you choose to do with your car. They are changible, so you're not stuck with anything (I deliberately omitted easily -- as I think that would be foolish)

Brian.

Camshaft duration has an effect on how and engine feels out on the highway. A short duration L/48 camed car with 3.73 or 4.11 gears
would feel strained on the highway. the same engine with the old
30/30 Z/28 cam would feel fairly relaxed on the highway with 3.73
4.11s.

I agree, 3:70 are the way to go.
