I am changing the color of my interior from Camel to black. I got the new seats, carpet and door panels in and sprayed most of the platic pieces to match a long time ago but I finally got tired of having the tan dash and steering column today so i went ahead and masked those off and sprayed them today. Unfortunatly I did apparently a crappy job of masking off the instrument cluster and got a little bit of overspray on the clear plastic cover which kind of blacks out the right side of the speedo I'm not to worried about it because I'm goign to be replacing it anyways but does anyone know a way to clean it off so I can read the speedo until i get around to that part of the project? I'm afraid I'm goign to make it worse with most of the paint removers I've used before...
I thought of that... was leaning towards a light brushing with steel wool but I'm afraid I'll scratch it up. Anything alcohol based will more then likely turn it white The bezzle is cracked and the lens is scratched anyways so I'm going to be replacing it but I didn't want to have to do it soon... lol
A little bit of mother wheel polish on supper soft cloth, like a diaper. A clean one!!
Dont rub to hard, may take little while depending on how thick, but should come off slowly.
I polish all our used dash lenses like this and they come out looking pretty nice. if there is no scraches and just dull I used Wenol Red. really gets rid of the white/cloudy haze
For getting paint overspray off of metal/plastic I use either Solvol Autosol (for metals) or, for something like that lens cover, Duraglit. Duraglit is wadding with a very fine abrasive in it & is used for polishing metals like brass. Any similar, fine abrasive, polish should do it. The only problem with Duraglit (or Brasso) is that it stinks!
:cheers
Autosol is sold by Eastwood, and is a very fine abrasive metal/plastic polish. Ad in catalog says "great for restoring plastic lenses" and IT IS!! Did my rear tail light lenses and they look new again.
Keep in mind...any compound/solvent you use on a clear plastic lens will make it clowdy. It will never be crystal clear again....

Solvol is excellent on bare aluminium, especially if you polish it with the solvol on a piece of card (pref the glossy type as used in greetings cards).
If you do use solvol on plastic & get a cloudy finish then something like Duraglit/Brasso will bring it up clear again, but it'll take hours of polishing.

I hit my gauges with a chem. that really screwed them up. I replaced the lenses when I redone the console. I couldn't believe the difference it made.(they shine like new, now) You would be surprised how much the lenses deteriorate after 30 years. Next, I'm replacing the spedo and tach lenses (more expensive, tho) Larry
