I know this seems simple, yet after looking at it, I can't determine the best way to remove the diff cover without taking out the crossmember above it. I need to fish out a broken yoke clip and install a new one, and I don't want to make it any harder than it needs to be. I already have the spring removed so it should be pretty simple.
If the upper crossmember has to be removed, with the diff then drop down? Do I have to remove the front connector as well to do all this?
I did check the archives but never found a definitive answer to all this.

As usual thanks in advance!
If I remember correctly, the haynes manual for these cars shows a procedure for removing the diff with the crossmember in place. The cover stays mounted to the cross member, and the diff housing pulls forward (towards the front of the car) to remove it. You need to disconnect the drive shaft to do this. You cant get to the bolts that hold the cover on to the cross member without removing the cross member. Pick up a haynes manual and read through their procedure.
If you decide to pull the cross member, do a search....many people have done this recently (including myself). The best way is with a two jaw puller, IMO. You'll be able to read how to do it once you search and find the other posts.
I pulled my cover and cross member without dropping the drive shaft. Installed new cover after cleaning cross member and installing new bushings in it. It was a PITA getting it back in, but it is possible. Suggest using glue to hold cover gasket in place...
Remove the crossmember and drop the whole thing out. Trying to follow that old service procedure for removing just the diff is poor. It will fall on you or dump oil all over and as said, it very hard to install that way.
Ok, thanks for the advice guys. I'll get out there tomorrow night (hopefully) and get that taken care of. I need to drop the fuel tank and find the 'new' leak anyway. Who knows maybe I'll get lucky and find the build sheet.
