Default Battery cable question

I sold a 74 convertible to a gentleman that came today to pick up the car. I've never had any problems with the car, but when we were test driving the car today the car just choked out and the battery seemed dead. When the car was towed back home I checked the battery and found that the positive cable to the battery was off the battery. Then I noticed that the entire lead contact for that cable was melted. What is going on? Can anyone help. Needless to say the car is still for sale. What could have caused that cable to melt?

Arcing? Try cleaning/tightening the clamp. Clean/clamp your grounds (battery, chassis, starter) at the same time.
