I have a problem and can't decide which way to go?
I currently have a Tremec 5 speed and don't want to beat up the drive
train with my new 427sb making about 600hp.
I'm getting mixed reviews about this tranny issue.
I believe the car will be faster with the auto, I like to shift though.
It's not a track car, traction is a big problem first gear now is really useless.
Would and auto give me better off the line take off?
The rear is a 355 gear, I still would like the over drive so a 700r4 is needed.
What stall speed would you recomend? I'm thinking about a 3000 atleast?
Should I get a manual valve body unit?
I've looked shifters for the auto and really haven't seen anything I like that would look ok in the console.
Anyone have pictures of a decent looking shifter??
Im not an auto man but when the 2004R/700R4 are modified the
2004R is a stronger more reliable trans, also the 700R4 has a 3.27
low gear that you sure don't need
I think that is backwards the 700R4/4L60 is the stronger and can be built to take tons of abuse. When you consider the 2004R is based on the 200 metric Chevette trans and the 700 is based on the turbo 350.
I can't see why would anyone want to change from TKO-600 to automatic? Friend of mine has a 600hp big block in his 77 vette and he sure drives the $hit out of it most of the time, the transmission is holding on just fine...
So would I. I broke 3 700R4's and 4 torque converters one summer with a bigblock. You will also find that there are NO lockup converters that can stand any descent amount of power. It just breaks them loose and burns the clutches.
I know very few will believe this but Art Carr can build a C4 yes the ford transmission to be stronger then the 400 and yes they bolt to GM's
Of the two I would choose the 200 over the 700 because I know the 700 can cause problems.
Again I would not swap a 600tremec for any automatic.

Your car would almost certainly run quicker et's at the track with the auto, but would not be near as much fun to drive IMO. I have an auto in my race car only becuase I do not have the skills to tune a 900 hp 2000 lbs. big tire race car.
I had a 620 hp 454 in my 69 with a Richmond 6 spd and that car was a blast to drive. Sure it would have been quiker with a turbo 400, but .....man that car was fun to drive!!! When I get it back on the road there will be a 5 or 6 spd in it.

I wonder how long that ROD is going to live behind your 540, I broke two of them with a 454 and some nitrous, bout 800 hp on street slicks. They both died a pretty quick death. When I get the car back on the street, no more nitrous for the Richmond 6 spd. I am leaning towards the 5 speed road race, I believe they are stronger.

I had to change the 6th gear in the ROD as I broke it twice. Richmond sent me the hardened race gear the second time....for $600 odd...
I haven't had any problems since.
IF you do go to an auto, go with the 2004R. I hear FAR less problems about them than the 700R4. There's a few places to get em but I believe B&M would probably be one of the toughest of em all. I've heard good things and bad things about BTO, but they're just north of where I live so I'd probably go with them only because of that.
