Default question about Flowmaster Super 40s

i see alot of you are running the 40s and S40s around here. im looking at picking up a set of them, but when i pulled dimensions off my stock mufflers they come up looking like nothing the Flowmasters have.

my stocks are 5x10Wx17L. the dimensions i find for the 2.25's show them as being 5x10x13. the specific model NO. im looking at is 952446, thats for the offset inlet, center outlet.

now, a 4 inch diffrence is pretty big. do these require some kind modification to either the pipes or mufflers them selfs, or do the mufflers have a long enough inlet/outlet pipes to make up for the diffrence?

Now Im just guessing here but you got to your local muffler shop and get some new tail pipes or if you can weld you could extend the pipe your self

The angle of the tail pipes (from the rear spring joint to the muffler inlet) determines the allowable muffler length. The rise of stock replacement tail pipes are more vertical to make room for the longer stock muffler. If you have a muffler shop bend a system, they will bend the tail pipe at an angle that will match the length of the muffler you choose, so it's good that you have extra room. If your car has stock replacement tail pipes and you install a shorter muffler you'll need to extend the inlet and/or outlet with straight pipe. I'm guessing you have a '73 or later if you are looking at 2 1/4" pipes.

Just had a set of Super 40's put on at the local muffler shop. The muffler guy ordered the mufflers after looking at the existing exhaust pipes/mufflers on the car. The inflow and outflow openings on the super 40 mufflers matter to fit on your car. Not a big deal just need to order the right configuration. On my 74 the Super 40's with 2.25 openings fit great. They fit further up under the fender and do not show from the rear at ground level. All that shows is the curved exhaust extension that the muffler shop put on. Looks real good and sounds great. Super 40 Flowmasters are not loud IMO. Nice idle and much stronger/deeper sound than original mufflers but again not loud.
