I purchased a new horn button, retainer and emblem for my 79 column. All three pieces connect with each other via three tabs mounted on the back side of the emblem retainer. My question is how do i lock them all together? It seems they just loosly fit together. Anyone who has changed on of these horn button emblems please chime in.
What's the old one look like (if you have/had it)? My horn button-retaining clip on the back of the horn button/emblem is riveted together. Three screws on the wheel itself hold the part that the horn button/emblem clips to on the steering wheel. Keep in mind mine is a '71 so it may be waaaaayyyyy different. Oh ya, mine is not tilt/telo either. Send Jim Shea a PM. He is the steering column guru around these parts.
Yeah, my 71 is completly different. Im installing a T/T column out of a 79 in my 71 and it did not come with a horn button assembly. I purchased the new assembly from Ecklers but there is no indication of how you put the peices together securely. I will ping Jim Shea also.
Sorry, Saginaw Steering Gear didn't make the horn cap. So all I have to go on is the AIM sheets. The AIM for 1969 - 75 says to spin over the three studs that are part of the Horn Cap. This would secure the Cap, Emblem, and Retainer together.
The 1977 AIM sheet that I have shows three parts making up the horn cap assembly (Cap, Emblem, and Retainer.) But it makes no mention as to how the parts go together. In fact, from the picture, I don't know how the Cap is retained at all.
It would seem to me that the Cap must have posts (or studs) that pass through the other two parts. You must have to spin the ends of the studs over (or use a dot of JB Weld) to hold them all together.
You may notice that no one offers the correct 77-79 center emblem, the only ones available are for the 80-81 and 82 models, when GM started ugly-fying the flags. If you resto parts people are listening, start making that danged emblem!!!
