I know that this question must have been asked a million times but I cannot see any recent threads on it. On my 1970 Auto 350 I have the normal exhaust system but with newish headers on. The system is quiet and unless you boot it, you cannot hear the V8 ! The pipes go straight through to the rear mufflers. I would like a deeper slightly louder sound like that of side pipes but cost prohibits side pipes and I do like the look of the rear mufflers from the back.

Is it possible to just replace the rear mufflers to get a better sound and if so where could I buy some good ones from.

I just had installed a set of Borla SS Turbos for about $275 ($106 each at Summit Racing plus local installation at a muffler shop). These have a flow-through design...and the sound (at idle)....mellow and throaty. At WOT..WOW! I have a completely stock sytem.

I had replaced a set of FlowMasters 40 Series. They were louder and had a very raspy sound. I liked them but they had rusted through, so I thought I'd change to Borlas...heard a lot of good things about Borlas

I have noticed, now, that at 60mph, when I "put my foot into it" I have more acceleration (smoother and harder) than before.

Good Luck!

I got tired of my 74 sounding like a Buick and changed the stock type mufflers to Flowmaster Super 40's. I like em. Very nice Corvette rumble at idle and they are not loud. You can still carry on conversation with passenger or listen to the radio. If you want more aggressive sound, go with regular 40's. The Super 40's also fit nicely to existing pipes with out any modifications. Flat black in color and smaller than original mufflers. Good luck!

I have the Magnaflow Turbo mufflers and my 79 w/headers and diff cam sounds great. Now Ecklers and Mid-America sell them in polished SS. Man they look good.

Thank you all. I went with the Borla, ordered from Summit and arrived in uk 3 days later. Going to have them fitted with larger pipes all through from headers. Will post when done.
