Hey, I got a new fuel line (carb to fuel pump) from ecklers and the shape is not at all the same as my original fuel line. It niether lines up with the pump or the carburetor. I tried putting it in both ways, neither way lines up and the shape is pretty different. Has anyone else had this problem? what should I? Do they make a more maleable fuel line that would be easier to bend? I dunno, let me know what I should try doing....also I was told not that much gas would come other, nearly 4 gallons came out durring the time i was working. I didn't have the car jacked up, I have a lift, so I was thinking maybe because it wasn't on an angle gas could still flow from the gas tank. Also the chamber that holds the fuel filter in has stripped threads, anything I can do about this, or just make the best of it?
Sounds like you may have the wrong line. I think I would double check with Eckler. About removing the line from the pump, yeah, you can drain the tank that way. If your talking about a stripped inlet to a quadrajet carb where the filter resides I think there may be a repair available, I'm sure someone will enlighten us......
the replacement line should not require more than a few slight bends before it fits perfectly. sounds like they sent the wrong part. why not try an make you own? lars has recently posted a very good solution that uses an inline filter and NO rubber hose is req'd. much safer. looks stock. better flow.
if gas is constantly flowing, try removing the rubber connection from the tank line to the pump and plugging it with a 3/8" bolt and a cable tie.
Yup, must be the wrong line. You should be able to get the right one at any parts store. There is also a quadrajet repair kit for the stripped threads problem. I don't remember exactly what it is since I have never used it myself, but it is available. You should be able to get that at your local parts store as well.
It has been my experience that factory steel fuel fuel lines are either a Dealer item or a Restoration vendor item. I have never found them at autoparts stores. But this is just my personal experience. I am doing a valve job on my 305 Silverado engine this weekend... I will be shopping for parts next week... I'll test the theory and ask for a fuel line for my shark and see what they say. Also... as others have posted... they may have sent you the wrong part. Taking it one step further, you may also have the wrong fuel pump installed for your year/engine combo. I know that several fuel pumps are available for a 70 LS5 454 that will physically fit and work on the car- but they all have different fuel line/return line configurations. To attach a "factory" fuel line, you (generally) must also have the factory fuel pump & carb combo.
I have the original engine in my 70 454 and I purchased a Chrome Holley fuel pump for it at one time- I had to do major fuel/return line "re-engineering" to get it to work. It had all of the ports, they just were not in the correct location.
Edit... there are over-size thread fitting repair kits at some autoparts stores... they are available for 5/16 or 3/8 line, and various carb thread sizes... Holley's as well. Some Holley's will require slight fuel bowl grinding. This is why I use rubber hose attached to clampless style fittings on my TriPower carbs. Repeatedly removing and installing (which I do) the steel fuel lines eventually leads to stripped threads. Eventually, even the thread repair kits will not work. A leaky steel fitting can cause a fire just as easily as a rubber one. But for infrequently (or improperly) maintained vehicles, a steel line is better. Don't forget there are other rubber fuel lines back at your tank.
