My wife and I bought our first vette today and trailered it home. It's a 71 LS5 with an AT transmission and I'll have lots of work to do. Mechanically the car seems pretty good but it will need exhaust, tuning, suspension, interior and other nick nacks. But I can drive it as is and fix as I go and that's what I wanted. Supposed to be Nevada Silver with blue interior but someone painted it blue back in the early 90's per previous owner. I am going to have lots of questions and hope not to get on anyone's nerves. I didn't have much time to crawl around it yet but I was trying to determine if the rearend and tranny are original to the car. The engine #'s match. I'm not familiar with automatic transmissions and couldn't find any #'s on it. Can someone point me to the exact location so I can wipe the grime off and check them? How about the location on the rearend?
The other thing I saw while under there is a cable that seems to be attached to a lever on the steering arm just outside the firewall in the engine bay. This cable runs down to the tranny but is broke off clean right before an arm on the transmission itself. What is this cable for? Sorry for all the rookie questions. I should spend some time searching the forums for lots of information and I will certainly do that when I find time. I guess I'm just excited and impatient with my new project. Hope to get some good information from all you knowledgeable vette owners that know every bolt on your cars.
I checked the ignition last night and I can pull the key out in any gear so that's something I need to fix.
Also found the #'s on the tranny right where you told me and they match so that was good news!
Where might I find the #'s on the rear?
Thanks,
Scott
On the bottom of the differential housing right where it mounts to the rear cover. There is a flat spot about a 1/2" wide. It will have the date code and ratio info code hand stamped into it. Good car to keep!
