Default Steer-roids?

OK...... now for the BIG question........how much better than a tight stock steering set up does it work?

What is your impression of the steering after doing it........from a WOW this is the part that is so MUCH BETTER?

I've got a pretty big credit coming in after doing my trailing arms in May and I might just be convinced to go with the "Steer-roids" set up if the improvement is REALLY worth the $$$.

Thanks in advance.

I've not driven Steeroids but I have driven the Corvette Steering "Jeep" box. I was very impressed with it for less money and less mods to the car.

I also have the Jeep Corvette Steering installation. Couldn't be better! Easy to install.

No comparison IMHO...

Much tighter, faster, and more linear. To me the old linkage assist steering could never be tight as the control valve always responds to initial movement with boost, which always had me turning in too much, plus it's loose on center feel was a PITA. With the Rack you turn only as much as you want, and it's always tight.

I considered the steeroids at $1,200.00 and for $675.00 the Jeep steering box gives me everything I want to improve my steering for my '79, which is used to do a lot of highway driving and mountain touring.

I was expecting a big "WOW" after I installed mine. I didn't go "WOW".

I lost a good amount of turnng radius and I don't really notice a quicker turn-in response.

On the plus side...
It's not much more expensive than replacing all of the old components with new ones, and it's actually a fairly easy install.

Control on rutted or crowned roads is quite a bit better now.

Looking back on it, it would have been really nice to have been able to drive a well set up car with each of the systems (stock, jeep, steeroids) and then make a decision.

From your avatar it looks like you are a corner carver. I was looking to get some opinions from people other than cruisers and this finally validates my feelings about the steeroid setup.

if i ever get serious about clup racing, i have to be carefull about making major mods to the car that will take me to an all out racing class. I'm trying to stay in street stock.

Well, the history of MY car is going on nearly 12 years now for me, and for the 1st 6 years had the '92 vette wheels on it, with new/fresh rebuilt everything in stock steering.....car wandered like a teenager all over the road....crazy, followed every rut, every dent, the originall 15 inch tires didnt react that way all that strongly....but when putting some modern rubber on it, well it brought out all the defects .....

I did my own install b-4 steeroids came on market....basically the same thing, but quite frankly I beleive mine is better, but lets not debate tech crap yet again...point being, it's a HUGE improvement over stock...

never drove a Jeep box conversion so have nothing to say, and the way we all tend to hotrod our cars here, I suspect there are NO two cars nearly the same, not even close...so any comparos are invalid, even IF we all met at a track and did round-robin testing....reason is there are so many other variables the combos are infinate....

tires, bushings, alignment, brakes, seating, various interior crap...

From all reports either conversion is a good valid improvement in the car, and only Zora knows the olde tyme steering is well past it's late 50's design use......main reason being TIRES.....

I have the steeroids one of the best modifications. And I will know, how much, and when, the car will turn when I need to

My car is FAR from stock....but...... the only two post 1977 changes to the car are aluminum racing radiator with dual electric fans and Steeroids with a KRC racing pump. Steeroids was a huge difference..............i like it......

You do loose a little bit of turning radius, not really a concern unless you make a LOt of U-turns,

The ratio is exactly the same as the stock system. Yes the lock to lock number is smaller but the rate is the same due to the reduced turning radius.

Me? I love it. Rack and pinion is always better than drag link. feels like a sports car

Hey Turtlevette,

I love the twisties, but I'm nowhere near your level. Have read your posts with interest over the past while.

I've never raced "competitively", just open track type events. Never had anything but street tires on either.

I probably need to qualify my statements a bit.....

I just recently installed the steeroids, and have never had it on a track with the steeroids setup. Since I've just moved to an area that doesn't have a track, it may be a long time before I get a chance to get her on one.

It's maiden voyage was a trip from Los Angeles to San Antonio three days after I did the install. On the highway, it was noticeably better. In the driveway, I missed the garage door the first time !
I had to back up and come at it again because of the loss of turning radius.

Although some may say that your front alignment specs should not need to change, I'm thinking that they do. I'm still going through some alignment issues. On the trip from LA to SA, I noticed accelarated wear on the outside edges of my front tires. I'm getting it re-aligned again Monday. Maybe that will make a difference.

There is a lot less slop in the system, but I suppose with all new components, the stock system can be tightened up. Over time, I've replaced the entire stock system except the drag link, and was never really happy with it, just accustomed to it.

It's different now, and maybe I just need time to get used to it. In trying to give the original poster an answer in terms she wanted, I just have not gotten the "WOW" factor out of this upgrade...but I do feel it is a good upgrade.

Rack and pinion is a great mod. My turning radius is not to bad. It does take some time to work the bugs out. Binding, etc., but worth it. I can drive down the worse highways now and she tracks on rails. Even better than my 2002 F-150.
