Default Two steering geometry questions

As far as geometry goes, what are the pros and cons of a rack and pinion setup vs. a standard pitman/idler arm setup? I'm talking about a comparison of new parts to new parts. If you replaced your old worn out system with a new rack and think it is the poop, don't reply.

Second: What are the pros and cons of front steer vs. rear steer?

Since a rack and pinion arrangement puts steering inputs directly into the center link, you get a more 'direct' feel than with the recirculating ball setup. With regard to geometry, if the rack is located in the same fore/aft and up/down location as the center link that it replaced and the tie rods are the same length as previous, there would be no change in geometry. As far as front vs. rear steer, there would be no difference in steering behavior (again given identical geometry) but it might be more convenient/ less intrusive to locate a rack and pinion setup forward of the crossmember.

'70, methinks you unleashed a bit of conversation here on that front/rear stear thing....

I personally don't think there is any inherent differance....

Opinion?? I will take a rack over any worm/sector setup for the total simpliticy....that's why....

Are you sure? I would agree that with the rack the inner points of the tie rods move exactly horizontal across the car. But with the typical pitman style setup the center link moves front to back as you turn. This is because as the pitman arm pivots it creates an arc which the center link must follow.

Wouldn't that change the amount of ackerman that the car has?

I would tend to agree with that, but on a different forum, I found them saying it makes a difference without backing it up. Now I always take forum advice with a grain of salt as the anonymity of posting here leads to posting opinions as facts.

There are numerous previous posts on this subject. Do a search to see the volumes that have already been hashed and rehashed on this subject. Do you want to race or just drive the car on the highway? How much money do you want to spend? Racks are great but other systems are just as effective depending what you want to accomplish.
