just replaced the rear differential fluid on my 1973 L 48. I'm not sure how much I removed from the differential as I was pumping the old stuff into an oil change container I have. It seemed that a lot more went in than came out though.
My question is how much fluid should be in the rear differential. I put 1 1/2 quarts in after first puting in 8 ounces of the GM Differential conditioner. After 56 ounces total of fluid (48 ounces of 80/90 weight and 8 ounces of conditioner) the rear differential started to overflow. Is this the right amount?
I removed as much of the old fluid as I could before the pump started sucking air.
ALRIGHT ALREADY!!! Now you did it- you made me get up and go fish my shop manual out of the garage. It gives the fill capacity for the differential as "3 3/4 pints". That's 60 ounces, so it sounds like you had about 4 oz. laying in the carrier. Well done Grasshopper!
what if the back of the car was on ramps? How far off would the fluid level be?
Wondering the same thing. I was gonna try and flush and refill mine tomorrow and was gonna roll the rear up on ramps to get to the drain plug and was wondering how much of a difference the ramps would make.
I need to build a garage soon and get a lift in there. It is getting tough to crawl under the car and I am not that fat yet.
