I finished up the installation of the Hot Rod Air bracket and Sanden 508 compressor last week and took it in for evac and charge Thurs. Wow this is a COOOOL system literally. This thing will freeze you out and at the same time it's quiet and you can't feel the engine bog when you turn it on like the old R4 compressor. I would highly recommend this combo if you need a replacement compressor. I used the existing condensor and evap coils with custom made hoses.
Interesting, thanks for the input. I've almost had enough of screwing with mine, one more problem and it's going to be time for a change. I see that you used the same evaporator and condensor. I didn't know you could do that.
check out the supercool condenser from VintageAir. It dramatically improved the performance of my system
I saw the supercool systems with condensers but not just the condenser alone. Anyway, my point here is my system makes use of a VIR valve vs a receiver and seperate valves. VIR means Valves In Receiver. The POR valve inside is continually sticking causing the system to freeze up, I bought a new one and it started doing the same thing after a while. Not sure what years other than my 75 used this system, a few anyway. I thought these aftermarket systems had to be installed as a system and all the components had to be replaced, i.e. condenser, evaporator, compressor etc. I even called Vintage Air last year and I believe that's what they told me.
Vette79's comments interested me because he indicated he changed only the compressor and adapted the hoses.

Vette79.........is that true???

I can't speak for '79 above, but that's what I did to my system some 11 years ago when going to '88 vette serpentine drive....at first I cobbled up a set of hoses, because in PC Maryland no one made up hoses, any non stock system was SAOL....in Florida here though, there are many custom a/c hose places so I had some crimped up....works fine, I did put in a C4 blower though....
Thanks for your coments. Since you have a 72 I'm guessing your system has a VIR under the right front fender?
Bill
NO, I have a POA valve, changed both of them out also when down here, should have done an adjustment to the POA valve for running 134 but didn't....supposedly not as cool, but I don't notice it, really...
I know there is a pipe available with a switch in it to cycle the compressor, that replaces those rare/hard to find POA valves.....and surely some changeout for the VIR system also....if not, may have to change the evaporator..
I changed to ND 6P (similiar to Sanden 508) awhile back. Comp., custom hoses & brackets to factory system. Note how the A/C lines go off to the side & then straight forward & back. http://ganeys.home.sprynet.com/77ACs.JPG
Changing to Sanden 508 in the SS. Comp., custom hoses & brackets to factory system. R12 on both.
OK, then from what I'm reading you both just changed from the old A6 large compressor to the Sanden or ND 6P compressors and had hoses made up so you were able to attach it to the existing system. POA valves either external or internal inside the VIR system along with everything else was left the same. You got a more efficient, smaller compressor.
Correct?
I just looked up some parts...73 - late 77 had the VIR so you both have a little different system than mine.
