anyone tried either of these crate motors or have any advice on which one to get...will have around 5k for the motor...its going into a 76 L-82 auto tranny car

do you have your previous motor? is it the original motor? because if it is it would be worth rebuilding it or keeping it in a crate to save it while using another motor.
if you're not worried about stock or don't have the stock motor, it won't really hurt the value of the car to put something other than a 350 in it. when i replace the engine in my '77, i'll prob use a 427, or something along the lines of that. it all depends though what you want (all performance, something just to cruise, a little of both, etc).

we do have the original motor and it was in running order and now it wont run at all...turns over fine but wont run plus the 76 was rated at a whopping 210 hp 
and that would take all the money i have to rebuild it to a 400hp motor and then take the chance of ruining the original motor

Determine how much horsepower you want for how you will be using the car. Since you have an automatic, I would call Jegs and ask what kind of torque converter they recommend for these engines. How driveable do you want the car to be on the street? You have "X" dollars budgeted for an engine, how many miles are on your tranny or the rest of your driveline? Those torque ratings are liable to introduce new problems on a tired components. All I'm saying is be prepared for the unexpected.

do you plan on keeping the original motor though? i would keep it just because of numbers matching in the future, but i agree, it would be a better investment to buy a screaming motor and put the original in storage for the time being.

Store the original numbers matching engine in the crate that your 383 comes in!
But you will be investing $$ in a torque converter and maybe a trans rebuild or at least a shift kit. Make sure your U-joints are in good shape on the driveshaft and halfshafts. Make sure your differential and rear wheel assemblies have very little play and can hold the torque.
I highly recommend a B&M shift kit for your automatic (not pricey). Your car will feel like an animal afterwards.
