Has anyone here replaced the front speakers in their '79. If so what kind of work needs to be done, does the whole dash have to be removed or can I get to it through the top covers?

it should be like my 78 and thats about 15 minutes per side
to replace.
small screwdriver and pry speaker grill to one side and it should pop
out, if original speakers there will be a cloth cover so lift that out of the way.
then its 2-9/32 (if i remember right) hex head screws, lift the speaker out and unplug.
i ended up removing the other end of the plug from the speaker itself
and soldered wires to it with spade clips so i could plug them on to the new speakers and plug it back in to the harness.
Fairly easy. Pop the grill and unscrew speakers. The only thing tricky I found was the screws near the windhield. I used a small ratchet offset phillips screwdriver.
That's what I did as well, a small ratchet with a screwdriver head is about the only way to get to the ones next to the windshield. You could use a 90 degree screwdriver as well I think.
Why not let us know what brand and model of speakers you put in and your opinion of them. I think I put in Pioneers and they are okay, but I really count on the rear speakers to carry the load.
