I posted a thread about a transmission leak that I had two weeks ago in my 82. I tightened the pan bolts and no more leak. Yesterday I came home from work walked up the driveway and there was a pond of tranny fluid under the vette. I guess I did not fix the leak even though it has not leaked in two weeks. I have driven the car twice in the last two weeks. Once around the block and once to the post office. The car has not been driven since last Saturday and there were no puddles on the car as of this past Tuesday.
So I checked the pan bolts again and got a 1/4 trun on each one. I could see fluid on the passengerside pan lip. So I wiped it off and added tranny fluid. Then I looked under the car and noticed a trickle of fluid comming doen over the lip of the pan from the topside of the trans mission. It looks like it is comming from where the cable from the throttle connects to the transmission. well the leak has mysteriously stopped again and no new tranny fluid under the car this morning.
Is there a a gasket or an O ring that might have gone bad at this connection?
I also stuck my finger on the base of this connection and there was a small amount of putty like substance on the tranny at this connection. I don't know if it is old oil and grime or if Bubba slapped some kind of putty or duct seal on it to slow or stop the leak???????????
I think that you're describing a leak at the detent cable connector. There is a seal there but it isn't an o-ring. It's more of a sleave. Not all that hard to change, but I'm not sure that it's available individually. You might have to get a seal kit.
To change this one, there is a bolt along side the point of enty into the tranny. Undo the bolt and disconnect the cable inside (disconect at the throtle first). The sleave seems to come out with the cable and you may have to wiggle it off. Replace with the new one and simply push it in and bolt it up.
It sounds like the detent cable, I had the problem on my car and for the longest time I was unable to figure out where it was coming from. There is a seal / o ring for the detent cable, clean the area around the cable, run the car for a bit and then have a look and see if it is leaking.
