Check the easy stuff first. Check all the electrical connections to make sure they are clean and tight, and check that the belt is snug also. Sounds like you could use a repair manual, available at all the parts stores for $15-$20.
Let's step back a bit. Why did you suspect that your alternator was not working? Did your battery die? Did you test your battery and it was OK? What started your alternator problem? And, you indicate in the title of your thread, "not again" so what happened before and what did you do to stop it?
Most common thing is the two wire connection that plugs into the altenator. I am assuming that the 77 vette has the same connection as my 82. The wires at that plug end become very brittle and are subject to corrosion. You can buy a new plug at Napa for under $3.00. that was what was wrong with mine. Also check the wires on the termanls on the back of the alternator and make sure the terminal nuts are nice and tight. Loose connections create arcs which creates heat a lot of heat and heat destroys wiring.
What is the function of the two pole connector. I think one terminal is for "alternator" light....or volt meter in center cluster.? I can see mine has been spliced at some time....and I am wondering if this could be why gauge is not working. Gauge and printed circuit / connector test OK.
