I've never swapped new front rotors onto the Vette before. As I got into it I saw that I need to remove the piece in the center of the old rotor which houses the inner bearing. Does this need to be pressed out & into the new rotor or can I tap it out & seat it without pressing it?
Time is of the essence- I'm in the middle of putting in all new brakes & going through the entire rear suspension. While I wait for trailing arms to be rebuilt, to get the rearend back, & to receive my new half shafts I'd really like to button up the front brakes so I can focus on jumping on the rest of it. I hate leaving too many loose ends! Thanks for any info.
Don't bother trying to save your old races...get new wheel bearings...you can have them pressed in or you can hammer the races...I've had good luck using a big socket and a hammer.
Unless you're referring to the whole hub. If that's the case, then you can drill out the rivits and tap the hub out of the old rotor. It may be subborn due to rust, but they are two separate pieces. If you do resuse the old hub, make sure you thoroughly clean the rotor mating surface on the hub. Otherwise, you will have a runout in the rotor from the rotor not being able to meet flush with the hub.
If it is just the bearing/race assembly, then just get new stuff.
Thanks George, I'm pretty sure the bearings were new when I went through it 17-18 years ago & I've only put a few thousand miles on the car since. I'll have them checked though when I have the hub & new rotor checked for runout.
Gerry, you nailed it. I had no experience with this but figured out that I need to seperate the hub from the old rotor, so I'll be drilling the rivets out this afternoon. Thanks for the help.
