With any luck and barring any f**k ups, I should be going to pick up my big block within the hour. How do I transport it in the back of my S-10? Ol'boy says to put it in an old tire, and then strap it in, but I'm not so sure I like that idea for traveling almost 2 hours.
I vote with the Ol'boys - tire will keep it from rolling around. Of course if you are going to strap it down, it could just as easily ride on a couple of well placed 2X4's...
Good luck, by the way if you don't strap it at all - just DON'T HIT THE BRAKES

Re: Quick! Transporting an engine block (rrent)
I moved a small block using a tire and two straps.
Set the tire under the oil pan, or more like the oil pan in the tire.
The motor I was moving had the original mounting hooks on it still, so I ran a ratchet strap from each of these to the hold down hooks in the truck.
An old tire will work, plus you may want to block it here and there to get it fairly stable. I would darn sure not use anything less than four good, strong staps - one towards each corner of the bed. I was hauling a 396 in an old El Camino, went around a corner here in good old AZ, then spotted 3 or 4 cows right in front of me - had to hit the brakes hard from about 50 mph. Had I not used 4 tight straps to hold that engine in place, I might still have knots on my head from getting smacked by a BBC.
