I switched the stock air cleaner on my 78 to an open filter. All I want to do is put a breather on the passenger side valve cover...it should be simple. The stock breather (metal tube) is on there solid. Is it bolted from the inside of the valve cover - do I need to remove the valve cover to remove it? Seems like too much work for such a small application.

no bolts but dried out rubber, same problem i had.
you have to pull out on it really hard while working it back and forth (no perverted comments needed)
i ended up replacing the rubber grommet in the cover found it in the help section at autozone also be aware that the breather needed is 3/4 if i remember right not the 1" it is way too big for stock valve covers.
good luck
