For those of you that have a little rubbing on your console when going in reverse, just put a couple of flat washers in between the trans. shifter and the shifter handle, works great. I did this on my '69, easy to do and have had no troubles.
If your shifter hits the console in reverse, just call hurst. I bought a new shifter last year for my 71 and they include a spacer which moves the handle about 3/8" to the right. I have no problems. The spacer has the grooves in it to make it solid. Using washers as a spacer is not a good idea.
Well, I can see how too many washers could be a bad idea. However, if all you need is an eigth of an inch (which could be the case), plenty of room for that. It's just a quick fix that might work.
When I did my four-speed conversion a few months back I ordered a Competition Plus shifter from Summit along with the (supposedly) Corvette-specific installation kit. Upon opening the box that the shifter came in I noticed that with the exception of fore-and-aft limiting bolts it was identical to the 'Indy' shifter on the toploader in my old Mustang, so this less-expensive unit could be used with the same mounting kit as the one for the Competition Plus. The handle that I got had about a 5 degree bend in it along with a 3/8" thick spacer and longer mounting bolts that move the handle to the right, and I have no interference problems when engaging reverse. The biggest problem that I did have though was that the 1-2 shift rod hit the parking brake bracket when attempting to engage first which I solved by cutting about 1 1/2" off the front of the bracket. Once that was fixed it worked great.
