I am getting ready to run some new sections of fuel hose for the fuel injection system and I was thinking about replacing the fuel neck because bubba knocked it out at some point in the past.
Is this a bladder tank? If so, I don't think I want to mess with it. It doesn't look like the pics of the bladder type lip. Also, what is the metal piece called? The sending unit is the part that the wire and hoses go to, is this all one piece?
For those with interest, here is a pic of the engine with the throttle body installed. I am wishing that I had done the adaptor plate in black. I still might, I didn't want to paint any of the machined surfaces to avoid getting paint in any gaskets, so the front of the plate is still a shiny machined surface. I think I will mask off the throttle body and the lower gasket and repaint that spacer black. At the same time, I will touch up the choke cover. You cannot see it in this pic because it is on the other side, but it was the same deal, where the machined surface was dramatically larger than the gasket and matching part.
I had to pull the underhood blanket to clear the air cleaner. Any suggestions for a thinner heat shield? I was thinking about the aluminized cloth that JCWhitney sells for under-carpet heat shields.
The 78's have a liner; it’s not really a bladder more like a plastic liner. The sending unit is separate from the neck. I just did a quick check at Zip and Eckler’s they don’t sell the fuel necks. Chevrolet no longer sells the fuel tanks and I have yet to find one other then used.
The bladder is a plasic liner inside the tank if you want change the sending unit {filler neck}, The bladder will pose no problem to you. Check out Zip or another vendor they will have a after market replacement I got one from Zip for a 82 so I could put the fuel pump in the tank. I also got one from GMparts direct but I waited a while for it!! As I now have two. I dont think you will have any problems

BTW The sending unit are one part, The filler neck down to base with the bolts you see there, then the sending unit
So I can just pull those 8 bolts and take that whole plate off?
I am concerned about the hoses on the right side. The left side hose just goes over the edge of the tank, but to remove the sending unit, it looks like I will have to remove those hoses first. Should there be enough play in them to get a good grip on them and get them off, then back on the new one?
Yeah the hoses are easy to disconnect and go to hard lines just a few inches furthere so they will not drop out of sight when you pull them off.
To get the sending unit out you need to twist and turn, hard to explain, at first it seems it won't fit through your gas door hole but it does. I would tape up the edges of the hole with maskig tape or something to prevent chipping the paint
