My mechanic replaced the lower speedo cable on my 81 after it broke some where along the line. I just got it out of the shop and drove it back and forth to Maine twice and it broke on the the way home. I put only 749 miles on it since it was replaced. Is it possible to replace the cable with a one piece and by-pass the cruise control, since I never use it anyways? Or should I replace the cruise control parts, because I think that is where the problem is?
It could be the upper portion of the cable, but before checking that, be sure that the new lower one did not come in to contact with the exhaust pipe. It could very well be that it did and cooked the outer cable case. This could cause it to get tight enough in there to cause the cable to fail again.
i have had alot of problems with the lower speedo cable.you can take apart the cruise-control transducer, and take out the bad spring that causes the cable to break.or replace transducer[pita] if cable housing is still good cable replacement is only about $4.00 :chevy
I found the problem with my cable to occur the second I touched the cruise control buttons. From what I understand, the problem usually stems from there.
If you need to change the cable on your own, it is very simple. You can get the part at any local auto parts store for less than $20, and change it yourself. [IMG][/IMG]
The previous owner of mine "bubba'd" a POS '78 CC onto the wheel well and it actually looked "stock". Trouble was that it didn't work when I bought the car, the speedo needle was always jumping all over the place and it kept breaking the upper cable to the dash. :smash:
Needless to say I removed the entire setup and put the correct cable in from the tranny to the speedo and have no more problems. I wouldn't have used the CC anyway since this car virtually never leaves the metro area.
Yup........bad transducer........ :mad
But, the part only cost $99 for a remanufactured one.
Now I just have to wait for it to come in. Of course it would be on back order.
