Default Carb/Timing issues Part II

Got some time today and got things somewhat back together. Still don't have the cooling fans 100% wired.

What was done. The 825 Mighty Demon I put in .031 Idle feed restrictors from the stockers. Best I can tell the stockers are about .036 to .038. I also reset the throttle plates so they are at .020 on the idle slots. The secondary one was almost closed and the primary was slightly more than .020. I upped the rear jets 2 sizes (nothing to do with the idle). Reset the float level and bolted it on.

Timing. I took a shot in the dark and just JB welded the advance plate to what I thought might be correct. It turns out I was not to far off. With a total of 35 degrees I get 23 initial. This is all in by 2500 rpm. It starts with no problem.

New Dewitts aluminum rad with Dual Spals. Again nothing to do with the idle but it was changed.

Fired it up and set the timing. I had to back out on the idle mixture screws from a previous 3/4 turn to 1 1/4 on the primary to about 1 turn on the secondary. This proved to be much better idle. It idles right at 950 rpm, I could go lower but why. It is responsive here at 950 and with this cam I'm happy with that. So far it seems much better and smoother. The idle is holding constant with no variation. I have not hooked up any vacuum advance yet. Still need a road test but I need to get the wiring done on the fans as it is quite hot here now. I'll give an update as soon as I can.

Overall I'm happy with the results so far. Thanks for all the replies to a previous post.

Ok so I could not resist. I took it around the neighborhood to give it a little run. Really tested out the new radiator. It heated up as I did not go over 35 mph but it idled fine and ran at low speed OK. Still needs a little squirter work as there is a slight bog when dipping into the throttle but that is no problem. Brought it into the garage at 200 degrees and it idled right at 950 rpm with no problem. Now I have to get the fans wired up and the exhaust done. Still have a 14 inch flex pipe connecting the collecters to the exhaust system. Have to get 2 pipes made and the bung welded in for the Innovate Air/Fuel meter.

glad to hear you are getting the issues worked out
BTW, not having the vacuum advance currently hooked up can also be a factor on her running a bit warmer than normal. You may see a drop in operating temps once you get it reconnected. Of course getting the fans all wired up also should make a big difference for you.

The heat is from no cooling fans. I need to wire them up. Maybe tonight.

I have a very thick gasket. Kind of a composite gasket that is about 3/8 inch thick. Isolates most of the heat

I'll be delayed another week as I'm on vacation next week. I did get the fans wired up so I can run it now.
