Haven't heard of many. Most of the "high performance" vettes were equipped with manual transmissions. I personally like automatics because I hate the repetetive motion of pushing in a cluth (especially in stop and go traffic) Automatics are a favorite of drag racers. If you have a 70 LT-1 and wish to convert, go for it.
I would say that GM did produce some automatic 1970 LT1`s. I only base this on the fact that in 1969 there were a few dozen L89 427/435 automatic Vettes built. High HP in 69 would logically follow that a few 70 LT1 auto Vettes were also built. But dont take it to the bank.
I know the 70 Z28 with the same motor had the option of auto trans so I'm pretty sure it was available for the LT-1 Vettes too. I can't recall actually seeing one though.
Black book indicates M40's were not available in 71 or 72 for the LT-1's. For 1970...it does not mention...Sure would like to get my hands on one of those ZR1's though
Too bad they were not. The M40 (TH400) is probably one of the best trans out there. Only until I got my little vette book did I realize they used the M40 in the corvettes for a while, versus the TH350's for their other stuff..........
Muddy,
So, the book show no automatics in 71 or 72 but doesn't show 70 correct?
That's why I'm asking. I'm thinking about converting my car over to a 70 LT-1 automatic for NHRA stocker. If I can't show that they were offered with an automatic they won't let me run it.
