Alright, so I just got my 72 back from the shop with the new hood and paint. One of the other things I had them do is set the timing - it was apparently at 14* initial before, and it was set to 8* (my distributor doesn't have vacuum advance). I experienced a rather worrisome problem on three separate occasions on the way home. When I started off from a stop, the ignition suddenly seemed to die out for a second, the car would backfire once with a moderately loud "POP!" and then everything would be back to normal and it'd drive fine. The entire thing lasts about a second. What the heck is going on? I'm assuming that for some reason the ignition is just cutting out for a split second, but why, and how do I fix it?
I'm running a Mallory distributor and coil - used to be a dual-point distributor, but I switched the guts out for the electronic kind (also from Mallory). I'm running the recommended ballast resistor as well.
I have never experienced this problem before, only now that I got the car back - the only thing the shop did engine-related was set the timing. Please help!

what is the surprise??? the timing is set way to low, why did you pick 8 degrees? and it gets better because as its puking on itself the RPM is increasing and the centrifugal advance is coming in and then all is well again

I didn't pick 8 degrees, that's what the guy at the shop set it to (manufacturer's recommendation that was printed on the label in the engine bay). I'll re-set the timing to 14* then. Thanks!
