Default Speedo Driven Gear Replacement?

First History, a few years back, speedo stopped working. Cable was good, so I took it spodo out of the dash and sent it out to be fixed. Had a replacement in the dash so I could watch my speed. Anyway, got the original back and installed. Worked fine. Fast forward to this year and the speedo stops working again. So go through the process (assuming it's the same thing) take out, put in space speedo and still nothing. Ok, I have an extra cable, replace that also. Still didn't work. So now I guess I'm down to the driven gear.

How do I remove it?
Is anything bad going to come out of the tranmission with it?
I'm assuming that this can be done without removing the transmission?
Do I need to have it removed before I order a new one? I looked in the catalogs and there are bunchs of these gears with different teeth.

As always, thanks in advance for the help.

For reference, I have a 75, 4-speed

Are you refering to the gear on the trans output shaft, or the gear on the end of the cable that plugs into the trans?

You can check the gears with the trans in the car. On 4 speeds the cable connects to a bullet shaped piece secured to the case on the passenger side or the trans. Remove the cable by turniong the aluminum cap nut on the cable, remoce the bolt and hold down clamp, should be a 7/16" bolt, and the speedo gear housing should slide out. May be a little tight and need some persuation.
At this point you can ck the driven gear and look into the trans and inspect the drive gear on the tail shaft. If the driven gear is bad, just replace with the same color (assuming the gear is correct for the speed). If the drive gear is bad the trans will have to be pulled.

Be sure to check the ends of the cable for wear or damage and be sure it is long enough to engage into the end of the driven gear.
Best of luck
Mark

Thanks Mark that was what I was looking for. That bullet shaped piece on the passenger side of the transmission and how to get it out. I didn't want to take the transmission out if I don't need to.

Paul also check the O ring on the bullet. Another case of "while I'm at it"...
