Default 1980 w/ecm questions

I have a 80 from california w/the ecm still in and want to remove it. I have read in the archives that I need to change the distributor, why is this? Also what about the converter locking up. Do I need to put in a manual control to get the converter to lock-up? I have already changed the carb to a 670 holley street avenger. thanks

I believe that the computer controlled the timing advance vs. mechanical advance built into distributor.

It is not necessary for the torque converter lockup to function but if you want it to, I'm sure you can rig it up to function just like the non-California 1980 model.

Timing advance is controlled by the ECM. It also controls the mixture on the carb of 81's. Can't remember if there is the same, computer controlled carb n the 80 LG4 model. If everything else is still hooked up, it's possible that your timing advance still works. If not, replace the distributor wit one from a '75 to 80 and you'll be fine.

I belive you can change out the parts on your distributor and put a vacuum advance can on it. I'm pretty sure I've seen that done here before.

I'm sure it's possible, but I doubt it would be worthwhile. The module is different as is the weight mechanism. i think the magnetic pickup would have to come out as well and who knows what else is different under there.

For $45, I think I'd go with the complete unit.
