This question is actually for my GTO, but i'm sure the answer will apply to Vettes as well. It seems my gas tank has finally given up the ghost. While driving to a Labor day barbecue, my car sputtered and stalled as if out of gas. Problem was found to be a plugged fuel filter. When we removed the filter, the gas that came out was so full of rust that it actually left the ground stained orange. I was able to get the car running in this manner and drove it to my brothers (1.5 miles) where it now sits in his garage. The question I have is, what do I need to do to ensure that the carb is OK? The carb is a vac. secondary Holley 750 80508S...
I guess that's what I get for not taking advantage of the Vette on a anice sunny day!
Hopefully the fuel filter did a pretty good job of getting the contaminents our before they hit the carb. I would still do a rebuild on it - I use the carb cleaner spray (one with a red tube) and spray through all the orifices on the metering block and carb main body. That should have it ready to bolt back on and go.
What are you going to do about the tank? Drop it and clean it our? Radiator shops can do this type of work or they probably make replacements.
Tank will be replaced, possibly with a fuel cell. I already had a rad shop clean it out and it didn't get me far. Car will get a new filter. I have a new Mallory pump ready to go on and will replace all of the lines as well at that time...looks like finishing the new engine for the Vette is temporarily on hold.
The original Holley filters are spring loaded and will allow dirt to enter the carb when they get plugged. If you are using the original Holley filter (some people discard them and use an in-line filter with no bypass) , you have sediment in your fuel bowls. Typically, this stuff gets sucked into the main jets and metering block, or metering plate if you have a 4160. At the very least, you probably will need to disassemble the carb and clean the bowls.
