I am in the process of putting a different rear in my 78, and i went to bolt up the half shafts and i could not get the u bolt in. then I notice threads in the yokes of the rear. so basically there are a different type of side yokes between the 2 different years. one has caps with bolts that thread into the yoke. one has a u bolt with a nut that threads on the end.is there a differene in strength? and are there any other sizes that i need to be aware of or will the Van steel HD end caps work?
Where did you get the differential from? The base rear ends came with a strap held on with bolts and nuts while the heavy duty rear end came with threaded yokes, solid caps, and thicker bolts.
The base 4 speed cars came with the straps.
The automatics, SHP(LT1,L82), and BB came with the caps.
Used GM caps run between $75-$100 a set these days. If you're using a used diff I'd pull the cover and check it over first.

Yeah, and be sure to clean all the rust off and paint them nice.
